Government launches consultation on protecting children online

The UK Government has launched a national consultation titled “Growing Up in the Online World”, inviting parents, young people, professionals and organisations to share their views on how children can be better protected online.

The consultation explores a range of potential measures covering social media, gaming platforms and AI chatbots, including possible minimum age limits for social media, stronger age-verification rules, and restrictions on addictive features such as autoplay and infinite scrolling.

It also looks at wider issues such as children’s screen time, the impact of online activity on sleep and wellbeing, and how families can be better supported to help young people navigate the digital world safely.

The consultation is open until 11:59pm on 26 May 2026, and responses will help inform future government policy aimed at creating a safer and more positive online environment for children.
