Small charities and community organisations across England can now apply for unrestricted grants of between £500 and £2,000 through the Groundwork Grassroots Grants programme, funded by players of the People’s Postcode Lottery.
The programme is designed to help small, local organisations continue making a positive difference in their communities by providing flexible funding that can be used where it is needed most, including core running costs.
Who can apply?
Eligible organisations must:
- Be a voluntary or community organisation, charity or other eligible not-for-profit organisation.
- Have an annual income of £25,000 or less.
- Be based in England.
Priority will be given to organisations that:
- Work in communities within the top 15% most deprived areas in England.
- Support marginalised or vulnerable communities.
Projects should align with at least one of the programme’s themes, including:
- Tackling poverty.
- Improving mental health and wellbeing.
- Supporting marginalised groups and reducing inequality.
- Enhancing green spaces and access to nature.
- Enabling participation in arts and culture.
Unlike many grant programmes, this funding is unrestricted, meaning organisations can use it towards day-to-day running costs, staffing, volunteer expenses, training, or activities that help deliver their charitable objectives.
Key Dates
- Applications are open now.
- Applications close: September 2026.
- Applicants will normally receive a decision within 10 weeks of submitting their application.
- Successful organisations will have 12 months to spend their grant.
