East Riding of Yorkshire Council trading standards are urging residents to take care when dealing with cold callers, at this time of year, who offer services such as tree cutting, roof repairs or gutter cleaning.
Key hallmarks of rogue traders, are those offering last chance sales, OAP discounts or otherwise too good to be true deals.
High pressure tactics, such as claims that the work must be done urgently within your 14-day cancellation period, are also often used, while supposed small issues at a low price may drastically change into big issues.
Residents can keep themselves safe, by asking friends and neighbours for recommendations and look for well-known local businesses. Obtain multiple written quotations that clearly specify the scope of work to be undertaken. Check that the trader is at the address provided, and if the trader claims to be a member of trade association, check this with the association.
Always avoid making large payments upfront, and never in cash, cheque or bank transfer. Instead pay on completion, either by debit or credit card.
Councillor Lyn Healing, East Riding of Yorkshire Council cabinet member for communities and public protection said “Many people opt for home improvements at this time of year, but we know that this provides opportunities for dishonest traders. It is vital to take sensible precautions to protect yourself against rogue traders who may install substandard or overpriced work.”
