The UK is preparing to phase out its older 2G mobile networks between 2029 and 2033, meaning anyone using a 2G-only mobile phone or connected device will need to upgrade to continue accessing mobile services.
While most people already use 4G or 5G devices, some older equipment still relies on 2G technology. This includes certain mobile phones, telecare alarms, medical alert devices, lift emergency phones, and some security and fire alarm systems. If these devices are not upgraded before the switch-off, they may stop working.
The government is encouraging individuals and organisations to start preparing now by:
- Checking whether mobile phones support 4G or 5G.
- Contacting their mobile network provider if unsure.
- Checking with the supplier of any connected devices, such as telecare or alarm systems, to ensure they will continue to work after the switch-off.
Although the switch-off is still several years away, planning ahead will help avoid disruption and ensure essential devices continue to operate as expected.
